This vintage real photo postcard is quite unique. It features the portrait of a well dressed lovely couple. The woman is wearing what is probably the largest hair bow ever worn in the history of the world. If she was outside and caught the wind just right, she would probably have the ability to fly. The message on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the couple’s first names are Jeanne and Willy and that they were photographed in 1920 by E. Lorsen in Strasbourg, France. (SOLD)

Mlle Polaire is actually the stage name used by French singer and actress Emilie Marie Bouchaud (1874-1939). Polaire was born in Algiers, Algeria and began her theatrical career as a cafe singer at the young age of 15. She moved to France two years later and ad0pted the stage name Polaire and became a music hall singer. In 1895, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec drew a sketch of her which appeared in the satirical magazine Le Rire. In 1900 her portrait was painted by Leonetto Cappiello and her popularity rose even more. She began acting in Paris in 1902 and became a major celebrity star. She was thought to be a gifted comedic actress but was also very well known for her beauty. She was famous for her tiny, corsetted waist. She was five feet and three inches tall. She lavishly overdressed in furs and dazzling jewels. In 1911 she appeared in her first silent film role and later appeared in six films of director Maurice Tourneur in 1912 and 1913. She then returned to the stage and toured the United States and England. She later made a reappearance in films, performing in ten (some were talkies). She died at age 65 and was buried in France. This cabinet card photograph (Photo 1) was taken in Paris, France at the studio of Reutlinger. Charles Reutlinger (1816-1860) was a French photographer whose studio operated between 1850-1937 in Paris, France. Among his subjects were many celebrities including the prettiest ladies of Paris. She looks beautiful in this image. She is sitting cross-legged and wearing dark clothing, boots, and a large bow. Examining the print of the front of the card provides some interesting information. We learn that the photographer of this image is the celebrated and talented Paul Nadar (1856-1939).He was a French photographer. He learned photography by his father, Felix Nadar, also a talented portraitist. Paul eventually ran his father’s studio. The establishment catered to a affluent clientele and was very successful. In 1890 he began shooting photographs from a hot air balloon. The press referred to him as “The Fearless Paul Nadar”. Nadar also photographed sites in Europe and Ssia along the ancient silk route. Some consider his work from that trip to be the first incidence of “photo-reportage”. In 1893 he became an agent in France for Eastman Kodak. The word “Eclair” appears in the bottom right hand corner of the photo. The Eclair Company was a movie production company established in 1907 and headquartered in Paris. The company produced many silent shorts in France beginning in 1908 and it’s American division produced films from 1911 through 1914. Included in their productions was one of the first film version of “Robin Hood”. In the top left hand corner of the photograph is the word “Bouffes”. The “Theatre des Bouffes-Parisiens” is a theatre located in Paris and founded in 1855. It was the location of the production that Miss Polaire was appearing in when she posed for this photograph. The name of the production can be seen in the bottom border of the card, “Claudine a l’Ecole”. The translated title of the play is “Claudine at School”. The story is from a 1900 novel by the French writer, Colette. It is a tale about a 15 year-old girl and her brazen conflicts with the headmistress and fellow students in her school. This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty performer named Michelucci. Although she is fully clothed, the photo is risque. Printing on the top right of the photo indicates that she performed at the Casino de Paris, one of the better known music halls in Paris. This portrait postcard was photographed by Lucien Walery. He was a celebrated Paris photographer known for his portraits of artists and cabaret dancers from the city’s music halls. He is very well known for his portraits of Mata Hari and Josephine Baker. Walery did a lot of work in the genre of nude/erotic photography. He photographed the beautiful women of Paris between the early 1900’s and the 1920’s. The postcard is part of a series (no. 4). The card is color tinted and in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage photo postcard features three contestants in the 1930 Miss Europe contest. Most of the women in the competition had won national beauty contests in their own country and progressed to the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up to competing for the Miss World title. This photographic postcard presents Miss Russia, Miss Austria, and Miss Holland. The three contestants are beautiful and marvelously dressed. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer. This vintage real photo postcard features Miss Hungary, a contestant in the Miss Europe pageant. She is beautiful and has a wonderful smile. This photograph was taken around the time of the competition (early 1930’s). This beauty pageant includes only European contestants. The contest was established by a French journalist in 1927. The first contest was held at the Paris Opera and 18 countries were represented. The winner in 1927 was from Yugoslavia. The latest winner (2019), is from Spain. Most of the women in this contest won their own country’s national beauty contest, and used the Miss Europa contest as a warm-up for the Miss World pageant. This postcard was published by well known and acclaimed photographer, Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series named “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France” (The Most Beautiful Women of France). This series is titled “L’Emeraude” (The Emeralds). There were a number of different series published associated with “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France”. As advertised, the model for this portrait is truly beautiful. This postcard was published by well known and acclaimed photographer, Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. Many of the postcards he produced featured nudes or risque images. ADDENDUM: The beautiful woman in this photograph has been identified. I stumbled upon her name while researching another postcard portrait (Miss Hungary) from the 1930’s. This enchanting woman is Agnes Souret (1902-1928) and she was “Miss France” in the inaugural Miss France contest of 1920. She was a actress and a dancer.She was French-Basque and born in Biarritz. She was the daughter of a former ballet dancer. The 5″ 6″ dark haired, brown eyed Souret became “Miss Midi-Pyrenees” in 1919 and then won the “La Plus Belle Femme de France” contest in 1920. This contest morphed into the “Miss France ” competition. The photo on this postcard is from the “La Plus Belle Femme” contest. She was just seventeen years old when she was in this contest. There were over two thousand entrants. Le Figaro stated that she was a “dazzling beauty”. The New York Times called her “the fairest in France”. The publicity about her pageant victories resulted in her becoming very popular in France. Photographs of her appeared in many journals and magazines. She also was covered by the gossip columns of the 1920’s. She appeared as a dancer in the Paris music hall, Folies Bergere and at the Opera de Monte-Carlo. She also acted in two “forgettable” films (1920 & 1921). Souret travelled to England and was in Revues at the Gaiety Theatre in London. She was invited to Hollywood for an audition to appear in films in 1922. No film offers were made. She published a book in 1922. It was entitled “The Famous Book of Beauty Secrets” and published by a Chicago company. Souret led a short life. She died of peritonitis at the age of 26 while touring Argentina. SOLD
The wedding took place in France. The groom was Albert Delattre and the bride was Jeanne Cuvellice. They are an attractive well dressed couple. The photographer who took this wedding portrait was Leopold Moulin. The preceding information came from the former owner of this postcard. This postcard was published by Thomas Illingworth & Co. (T.I.C.). The company was a paper manufacturer founded about 1904. They produced the “Horse Shoe Brand” photographic paper in London England. In 1919 they were bought by British Photographic Supplies company, Ilford. An internet source states that the company produced postcards with horseshoe stamp boxes between 1919 and 1930. This snap shot photograph tells a story. It may go something like this. It is a cool winter day in France. Its 1966. A handsome father puts on his winter coat and scarf, bundles up his two adorable children, and the family goes for an enjoyable brisk walk down the boulevard. They are not alone. A number of pedestrians are occupying the sidewalk. The man and his children are well dressed and appear fairly affluent. An inscription, written in French, can be found on the reverse of the photo. Perhaps a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will be able to translate the inscription for the rest of us. The photograph measures about 2 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage snapshot features two very pretty young women eating ice cream as they stroll down a street in St. Andre, France. It appears that they may be at a street fair. These thin waisted young ladies could be fashion models. Perhaps they are? Note the Vespa motor scooter that is parked behind the woman wearing the solid color dress.
